Pete Townshend

12 th July and 7th August 1993

Beacon Theatre and Brooklyn Academy Of Music (BAM)

New York City, N.Y.

Source: Silver Italian bootleg “U.S.A. 1993” (Live Storm, 1994; LSCD 52551/1-2)

Track listing:

01- Heart To Hang On To
      02- A Quick One While He’s Away
      (Very good audience recording)

      03- North Country Girl
      04- Goodnight Irene
      05- Save It For Later
(Excellent soundboard recording)

      Original cover artwork included.

Notes:

MUSICIANS:

Pete Townshend: guitars, vocals
John 'Rabbit' Bundrick: keyboards
Peter Hope Evans: harmonica
Phil Palmer: guitar
Andy Fairweather Low: guitar and vocals
Pino Palladino: bass
Simon Phillips: drums
Billy Nichols, Katie Kissoon: backing vocals

All songs by Pete Townshend except North Country Girl and Goodnight Irene,
traditionals arranged by Pete Townshend; and Save It For Later, by Dave Wakeling and The English Beat.

This is a very good audience recording of Pete’s second show at the Beacon Theatre in New York, during his Psychoderelict tour. Unfortunately, it is not complete: according to www.thewholive.de , tracks 01-04 are the introductory songs (the initial Cobwebs And Strange is missing), tracks 05-13 are the encores; therefore the whole of Psychoderelict –half of the show- is omitted.

On track 12 Pete invites on stage to accompany him Michael Cerveris and Christian Hoff from the original cast of the Broadway production of Tommy, which happened to be present in the audience.

I wanted to include a few bonus tracks, but they wouldn’t fit into a single cd, so I decided to add a bonus disc with five songs excerpted from a different silver cd bootleg, rather than creating a separate torrent with bits and pieces and only 30 minutes long.

“U.S.A. 1993” is an Italian boot which comprises, nearly complete, Pete’s show at the Brooklyn Academy Of Music on August 7th 1993 (plus two bonus tracks from the first show at the Beacon Theatre on July 12th.) This concert has been officially released on double cd as BAM 1993 in Pete’s signature series of live recordings, and on dvd as Psychoderelict Live in New York by Universal. Both are available from Pete’s commercial site www.eelpie.com.  By reasons unknown, however, these regular releases omit three songs, which are featured on the silver boot.

Therefore, tracks 03-05 of the present bonus disc (=tracks 07, 10-11 of disc two of the original boot) are the “missing songs” from Pete’s show at the BAM in New York. Particularly interesting are Pete’s guitar impromptus before introducing an extraordinary full-band version of Save It For Later. This is an excellent soundboard recording, perhaps a copy of the same master used for the official release. North Country Girl was the first encore; Goodnight Irene and Save It For Later followed You Better You Bet and preceded Face The Face.

Tracks 01 and 02 of the present bonus disc (=disc 2 tracks 13-14 of the original silver cd) are added as bonus tracks on the “U.S.A. 1993” boot, perhaps to make up for the omission of the two final numbers from the BAM show –which do appear in the regular releases: Won’t Get Fooled Again and Magic Bus. They are taken from a very good audience tape of Pete’s first night at the Beacon Theatre, on July the 12th.

NEW: Roger Daltrey live in Rome 2012 - 3CD - March 23 - soundboard

Roger Daltrey performs Tommy

Live and Direct FM radio broadcast by "Radio2 Live", Radio2 RAI [second channel of italian national radio], from Auditorium della Conciliazione, Roma (Italy), on friday 23 March 2012, 21:15 hours [CET] - the SECOND of two roman dates

WARNING: in italian radio customes the DJ speaks a lot in-between songs. And I mean a lot.. His/Her purpose is to introduce songs with bits of bio and translate what the artists say, or to describe to radio listeners what's happening on stage. It may gets VERY annoying, and trust me it does, thus we might consider this recording ONLY FOR COMPLETISTS. But the songs, the actual music, are (usually) not spoken over in the middle of them. It has to be noted that italian djs are on the whole adviced to talk that much by the same record companies to prevent bootlegging.

Notes:

No recompression or re-encoding took place with the Glastonbury video. The audio, however,
on the original DVB-T feed contained a few anomolies, so I have taken the audio source from
an alternative recording. It is therefore, not the original MP2 feed, but an AC3 feed
recorded via a Standalone DVD Recorder.

The video is glitch-free except for one tiny moment during Won't Get Fooled Again. This
glitch happens when the camera is panning the site and therefore won't really spoil your
viewing enjoyment!

They did not play Cry If You Want towards the end of My Generation nor did they play the
alternate ending to Won't Get Fooled Again. The broadcast was not live and therefore there
is no gap between Won't Get Fooled Again and The Kids Are Alright as at this point the Who
would have left the stage.

Notes:

This DVD was created with the inspiration of ooru, alexander, ricardo & knuckle9 on Long
Live Rock.  Taken from the 2 disc Japanese version of Charlton 74, it has been
re-tracked to the correct playing order whilst retaining the original Pete Townshend
Interview broadcast by the BBC.  Also included as a bonus is an FM audio recording of
the remaining tracks not (as yet) available in video format.

Where necessary the audio between tracks has been mastered to produce a "seemless as
possible" mix.  This is due to the re-tracking of the original dvd's to correct the
playing order.  You may still hear anomolies which could not be masked without
degradation of the audio, notably before Substitute and before See Me Feel Me.

For those interested; tracks 1 to 4 and 9 & 10 were taken from Disc 1 of the Japanese 2
Disc set and tracks 5 to 8 and 11 to 16 were taken from Disc 2.

My Generation Blues was played for the first time at this concert.

The Pete Townshend Interview and an edited version of the concert was first broadcast on
BBC2's 2nd House show.  The interview was conducted by Melvyn Bragg and was recorded on
29th August 1974.  It was first broadcast on 5th October 1974.  It was re-broadcast on
7th June 1975.  2nd House ran from March 1973 to July 1976.  Re-broadcasts were known as
2nd House 2nd Run.  The interviews are slightly different on each broadcast.

An estimated 75000 were in attendance, even though the limit was set to 50000.

Artwork, MD5 Verification File and a Newspaper Article are all included.  Thanks to
Carrie for supplying the Newspaper Article.

Excellent footage from the 10th row in front of Pete.  Being a stadium, I was not as steady as I normally am in less crowded venues.  Still, excellent stuff.

They me be getting old, but as Pete said many years ago, they are not boring! No they are not the who of 30 years ago, but they rocked!

Notes:
Before this release, several other bootleg DVDs had compiled 1960s Who footage, with varying degrees of success. It's difficult, however, to imagine a better, more comprehensive one than this two-DVD collection, which assembles almost four hours of live, mimed, promo, interview, and documentary clips from various sources. The image and sound quality are usually as good as, or better than, what's seen or heard on those previous compilations, and most of clips appear in the most complete form known to exist. There are a wealth of riches here, from relatively common (at least to the people who collect this sort of thing) items such as their 1965 Ready Steady Go and Richmond Jazz Festival appearances to some little-seen sequences such as their mimed June 1966 appearance on the Swedish Popside show; a live July 1966 London college gig, including a not-too-audible version of "C.C. Rider"; the Monterey Pop film outtake "Pictures of Lily"; live and interview footage from Helsinki, Finland, in May 1967; and promotional films for Tommy, linked by a few interview segments in which Pete Townshend explains the songs. There's even the U.S. promo film for "Substitute," in which they mimed the amended lyrics (omitting the reference to a black father) in the American 45 version. It doesn't gather every last scrap of 1960s Who footage: there's nothing from their Woodstock appearance, and their famous violent performance of "My Generation" on The Smothers Brothers in 1967 is missing the end bit where Townshend smashes Tommy Smothers' guitar. Some of the portions are obviously lifted from sources that are easily accessible via commercial releases such as The Kids Are Alright, Monterey Pop, and The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus, and no doubt some of the clips could have been presented in better condition if this was an authorized production. The likelihood of such a thorough authorized compilation seems distant, however, leaving the gap for bootlegs such as this to exploit. Despite those very minor shortcomings, it's an amazing document, and totals up to the most convincing evidence ever assembled as to the Who's mesmerizing power as a visual performance act.
