Who
1989-07-25
Silverdome-Pontiac, Michigan

Recorded By: Robert Mullen (lvrwm)

Comments: Here is a pretty good sounding Who show from the big
production tour they did back in 1989 at the Giant Cavern (Silverdome).
We were in the 1st row, upper deck at about 5:30 (between center
and stage left. A bit echoey sometimes, but a clear recording as the
people around us were well behaved. We had a group of 8 at this super
fun show.

Notes:
The Who brought the '89 tour to the Cleveland Stadium, which had opened in 1931, hosting both baseball and football. A big, old, concrete place from another era, parts of this stadium now lay at the bottom of lake Erie forming an artificial reef. This show featured a fairly standard set for the Who. Pete does play a little lead guitar during 'Face the Face'. When he did this number he mostly performed as a singer, although on this tour he usually had an electric guitar around his neck, and at few of the shows he got off a few licks during the middle of the song. The version of Summertime Blues in the encore took the show up a notch.

This was requested by an attendee of the show and I hope this is a nice souvenir for them. For the rest of us, the sound here is not well-resolved and somewhat thin. What is here is also not complete, as the start of Substitute. Where Long Live Rock is is a good question. The reason Pinball Wizard and See Me, Feel Me are not split is because the speed ran a hair fast on this one. These 2 songs were not exactly split very well, so it was easier for me to leave them intact. If you wish to split, go right ahead. I will say that if you decide to torrent this out later and split the tracks, I would suggest changing the text file to reflect that. There is some booing done between Baba O'Riley and Drowned as well as again in disc 2 (the exact spot escapes me now). If anyone happens to know what is going on here that would be excellent to know.

Sound quality is good. Possible tape flip between 5:15 and Pinball Wizard.
Roger gets very frustrated and concerned with the crowd pushing each other at the front.
Roger tells crowds this often on this tour to prevent a repeat of the tragedy in Cincinatti
1979 from ever happening again.

JEMS 'S' master recording. Fair sounding recording with lots of phasing issues especially on the vocals. Recording also has numerous dropouts lasting 1 second or less throughout the recording.

The first of two JEMS masters of this show, and the 2nd of two nights in Seattle. A great show featuring a rare Kenney Jones era 'Shaking All Over' in the encore. Whatever mix of stimulants Pete was doing was working for him at these Seattle shows. The band stayed at the Edgewater Hotel on the waterfront, where you could rent fishing poles in the gift shop in the lobby and 'fish from your windows'. The hotel was made famous by a Led Zepplin groupie episode told in part on Frank Zappa's 'Live At The Fillmore' album. Rabbit had a bathtub full of fish during the stay for these shows.

Another now departed arena hosted the 12th night of The Who's Winter '79 tour.   I felt like this show was a close second to Washington D.C. as the best of this tour.   A very energetic crowd feeding off a equally energetic performance by the band this night.
The only incident of the night came after a firecracker went off at the end of 'Baba O'Riley' leading Pete to respond:"Any other cunt does that and I'm going off this stage and I'm not coming back!  The guy that threw that, just come up here...just come up here, I'll fucking smash a firework up your ass! We don't need that in rock concerts.  You picked the wrong cunt!   Just feel lucky you can still see..."
The godfather addressing the punk....
Great versions of most of the tour staples follow.
This really should have been where the tour ended, as Boston set a bar too high for the added 2nd show in Washington to top.   The band wanted to do a second show here after the cancelation in Providence,  but couldn't get the arena.
Roger before 'Long Live Rock':
"We don't have to say it's really been great in Boston, it's always great!  We were trying to do another show tomorrow, but they wouldn't let us!  But we'll be back next year sometime anyway...They haven't beat us yet!"  Of course,  they wouldn't return to the Boston area until 1982...
The encore had a couple of great surprises, the only appearance of 'Shaking All Over' on this tour going into a very good 'Big Boss Man'.  "Our boss is you, you're the boss!  Hey, we love ya.": PT.
Pete also pulled off a fairly quiet version of 'Baby Don't Do It', which the band hadn't played since 1972, before ending the show with a reprise of 'Dance It Away'

At the 10th show of the Winter '79 tour Roger greets the audience with 'It's been along time' to which Pete responds 'Not fucking long enough!'  Despite that, Pete comes out swinging!  This might be the best show of tour.   Pete starts out the show in punk rock mode, wearing a leopard print t-shirt, which along with his Dr. Martins (from Robot on Chelsea Road, for the fashionable among you...)seems to put him in a more youthful/rebellious frame of mind.  This is reflected in his playing,  as he is at the top of his game for the entire show.   After the first couple of songs, he traded the t-shirt for black jacket with no shirt.
This is the first of two nonconsecutive shows at the Capitol Centre.  In response to the deaths at the show in Cincinnati, then-Providence Mayor Vincent '"Buddy" Cianci, who oversaw the Providence Civic Center auditorium, canceled the show that was to be held there on December 17th.   The Who's management looked at their options and decided to add a second show at the Capital Centre to make up for the canceled show.
Just as a side note, The Capital Centre, along with The Philadelphia Spectrum, the Chicago International Amphitheater, the Richfield Coliseum, and the Buffalo Memorial Auditorium, have all been torn down as well as the next two dates on this tour, The Veteran's Memorial New Haven Coliseum and The Boston Garden, and the Pontiac Silverdome, while still there, is no longer in use...time marches on.

The encore here features some of my favorite improvised lyrics of the tour. 'I listen to all the great thinkers, but I prefer to listen to the great drinkers. I was born in a trunk in Acton, and I like Eric Clapton...just got to be happy and dance it away!'.   The version of 'How Can You Do It Alone' that follows is a very uptempo 'punk' take on it, including a 'one-two-three-four' count in.
The tape for this one came out particularly good as we were in the 8th row on the floor in front of Pete, which, were about the same seats we had three years earlier for the Who's performance here.

JEMS master recording.
This show from the 3rd leg of The Who's 75-76 North American Tour was recorded by the 'S' in JEMS. It is Keith Moon's last U.S. performance, and he was in great form this night, and high in the mix!  This show also features a early 'Who Are You' improvisation during My Generation.  The master tape was missing about 55 seconds towards the end of Won't Get Fooled Again (reel change!) This version includes a patched version, and the orginal incomplete version of Won't Get Fooled Again.

NOTES:
A wonderful recording and performance, this one rates as one of the best live Who recordings from the 1972 tour. Although it is audience sourced, the band comes through loud and clear with limited audience chatter and noise. There is an echo typical of an audience recording in a relatively large venue. As is mentioned in the source info, the sound quality is slightly lower than the Who Is This LP boot, albeit more complete so I decided to clean this source up. There was a high presence in the low mid range, common with many audience recordings, causing a muffled hum. I have thus attenuated the appropriate frequencies containing the lowest amount of musical audio. I also adjusted the low and high end response, giving Entwistle more room and the entire recording a clearer, more natural sound.

this seems to be close to the whole concert,
 except apparently "sensation" is missing.
tracks 1-21 will all fit on 1 80 min. CD and come from the same source.
tracks 22-24 (the encores) come from a different source which is stereo,
but not as clear or close up sounding as the 1st source is.
 both sound like audience recordings,
but the second source has alot more audience in the recording
and sounds like it was recorded with a very primitive deck and mikes.
source one comes from a CD trade and is missing all the encores.
source two comes from a dime download saved to CD.
both sources were extracted from CD and sb's were aligned
(after some retracking) in conversion to flac.
Do not sell this recording.
Share freely, losslessly and gaplessly.
comments:
I recieved this in a trade on CD several years ago,
and had to balance out the levels and re-track it a little.
The recording is hardly wonderful, the sound in the Tea Party
was notoriously awful, and it's a 1969 recording in there.
And it's the Who, never easy to get a nice recording of.
But it's pretty enjoyable. sounds like there aren't alot of
analog generations in the recording. some of the breaks
between songs are edited out of the 1st source recording but
most of the between song banter seems to be intact.
The first source is mono, but was recorded closer to the stage
and may be a lower gen source too.
This was fairly early "Tommy" era, some of the songs sound
a bit ragged, while other sound pretty hot.
both sources seem to be missing "sensation" and the encores
are taken from the 2nd source, missing from 1st one.
Keith's drumming sounds a little ragged in some of these songs,
he seemed a little out of it but made it through this show
(unlike 3/76 Boston Garden show)
