RE-UP: Roger Daltrey live in Charlotte 2009 - 2CD - November 22

Roger Daltrey Live
(Paperzoo/Roger Daltrey)
2009 November 22
The Fillmore at the NC Music Factory
Charlotte, NC [USA]

audience recording
Seat: 12' (4m) from stage on Left in front of Simon Townsend

NOTES:
I think this is my best recording of all.
I am SO happy with the show, but just how everything seemed to fall into place.
Roger was entertaining, and the show just unbelievable.
The mics picked up SO much of the music and negligible chatter almost non-existent.
Clearly times of crowd singing, but not to distract the listener.

The only snafu is during the first 30 seconds of freedom ride.
The coax cable didn't have a clean connection so I lost the last 5 seconds of Roger's talk prior to the song, and song had very miniscule skips (3-4).

This is my last show for the year, and I could NOT have asked for a better concert and quality recording.

What a great concert. Roger commented that he was getting over being sick and felt great.
The band sounded good. I think this recording sounds pretty good. Judge for yourself.

The hall was less than half of capacity. The folks that were there were on their feet for most of it.

Bit of trivia for Philly natives:
"Freedom Ride" and "Gimme A Stone" are covers from the 1998 concept album Largo, which is loosely based on Dvorak's New World Symphony.  Largo was the creation and pet project of longtime Hooters producer Rick Chertoff and prominently featured Hooters frontmen Eric Bazilian and Rob Hyman.

I was really impressed with this show and performance. I couldn't ask for more ideal taping conditions; fantastic PA system, very respectful crowd, and no yackers anywhere in earshot. Roger was in fine form and sounded great!  There were a few issues with the equipment according to Roger, lost sound in his monitors, and an air conditioning vent blowing directly down on him.  Neither me or the crowd noticed anything wrong, but Roger complained a few times and even stopped a couple songs after a few notes and switched up the intended order to allow for some quick fixes.  This recording is untouched other than a 3db overall volume boost and normalizing to 85%.  It's raw and it's pure...

Notes:
The two versions of My Generation are demos, played through the P.A. for the audience. There's a simple lyric change in Magic Bus: "...I'm so nervous I guess it shows. Don't say a thing about my great big nose..."

Dave Marsh wrote about Pete's first solo-concert: "On April 14, 1974 (Easter Sunday), Townshend played a solo gig-the first of his career, for the Camden Square Community Play Centre ... Meant to be a quiet afternoon's entertainment, the solo show was blown out of all proportion when the press got word of it. Townshend spent a panicky week's preparation, then came out and did a fairly casual show using electric and acoustic guitars, piano, some synthesizer tapes and the original "MY GENERATION" demo as he ran through a set that also included 'The Seeker', Jimmy Reed's 'Big Boss Man', 'Substitute' and 'Pinball Wizard'. Despite a drunken heckler, the show was well-received and Pete was surprisingly confident." (Dave Marsh, Before I Get Old - The Story of The Who, page 442).

Geetarz.org: Pete Townshend's first ever solo gig. Recorded at London's "Roadhouse" Theater. Fascinating show captures Pete at the height of his songwriting prowess, and at one point he even plays a cassette tape to the audience to explain the concept of a demo to them. Although far from perfect, it's a quite listenable audience recording. This is the complete performance sourced from a private collection, this recording is not only superior in sound quality to those found on commercially released bootlegs such as Wild Action but is also complete, featuring the complete performance of "North Country Girl". An essential part of any core collection.

The Who

Audience Recording
Recorded by: Yogilou
Location: Section CCC (floor, right center in front of Pete, 20th row from stage)

Great night with The Who! This recording of the show started out rough, as my seat was right next to a security person. As a result I couldn't check my recording levels until near the end of The Punk and the Godfather, when I realized (as I expected to find) that the recording levels were too high. This resulted in some clipping (particularly during the vocals) during the first 5 songs, but it does get much better after I was able to turn the volume down. I did perform some volume level reduction on the first five songs so they blend well with the rest of the show.I do think the loudness of this show pushed the limits of my microphones though.

Zak Starkey was not on drums again in this show (a real bummer for me, as he helped saved The Who as far as I'm concerned), but Scott Devours did a fantastic job. So don't worry if you are going to see the band in one of the upcoming shows. It sounds like Zak has tendon issues and is done with the tour. Finally, Roger's voice was strong overall, but had moments of struggle. I would love to see them again on this tour, however, and feel fortunate to have been able to see them in Denver.

Notes: I will always have a soft spot for The Who.  They were the first big stadium show I saw back in 1989 when I was 17 and I honestly have never been disappointed in the times I've seen them over the years.  Say what you want about Roger's voice or anything else, but I thought this show was great and a lot of fun.  The recording came out pretty decent as I was fairly close to the left side hanging stacks.  My only complaint would be that it wasn't very loud…never thought I'd say that about a Who show.

Total Time: 137:32.46

Special Notes: The location was decent with a wall behind us so no crowd behind us. i was able to stand for the entire show facing the stage. The bad part was we were the 3rd and 4th seats from the aisle and seats 5-8 were beer runners and our side was the only way out. You will hear them about 3 times during the show plus during Tea & Theatre they knew it was the end so in the middle of it the group gets up and chats on the way past me while exiting out. The kicker is about 43-44 minutes into the show one of the group stumbles right into my rig which was on my person. This caused a one channel drop out that will last for about 42 1/2 minutes until they bumped into me again actually straightening out the issue. To fix the 42 1/2 minutes I copy / pasted over the bad channel with the good channel. It's still very good though. This affected I've Had Enough to the end of Doctor Jimmy. Do I like this new MSG configuration after their so called upgrades ? I would have to say not. I truly prefer the old school Garden. It was a great evening regardless. The band was feeling it and so was the audience. Roger did take a fall during I think it was Baba O'Riley while dancing around the stage but bounced right back up without missing a beat.

notes: great show, if not a little ragged, the band made a couple of mistakes here
and there.... the two most noticeable to me, first note of "Cut My Hair" way off-key,
and Rog seemed to come in too early on the first verse of WGFA and kept on going... it
then seemed like the band didn't know whether to keep on going too, but Pete finally got them
back on track at the end of the passage.... easily the most disjointed version
of that song that I've heard.... still, everyone left a satisfied customer, which
is all that matters.... besides, with the setlist starting to be the same nightly,
those little off-moments are what makes one show different from another...

notes: another great show by The Who, definitely worth the money.... not too
many glitches tonight, but Rogers mic did cut out briefly during "Doctor Jimmy",
causing him great consternation, but it apparently was back on when he threw it
to the floor, because you'll hear it thump as it hits the ground.... the older guy next
to me sat down during almost the whole show due to back problems, but "Pinball Wizard"
got him on his feet clapping and you'll hear him singing off-key during almost the
whole song....

Notes: great show by The Who... I was about 15 rows back, DFC, and I'm pretty happy with the
results..... there were a couple of mistakes by the band here and there, and it took the soundguy
a couple songs to really get dialed in on the mix and a few songs to crank up the volume, but still
a nice clear recording overall, IMO.... not too much crowd noise on the recording, either, which
always makes me happy when that happens.... anyway, Simon took lead vocals on "The Dirty Jobs"... and
they "flew in" a John Entwistle bass solo during "5:15" complete with John's "bass cam" on the big screen
and also used Keith Moon's vocals for "Bell Boy" while showing footage of him singing during what looks to me
to be from the Charlton show from 1974..... in both instances, it worked great....

The Who in the Carolina's  doing Quadrophenia, what can be better. Had a great time at both shows (Greenville will be up soon. Very good to excellent audience recording. Crowd noise bleeds in on occasion but it is a good representation of what it was like.  Pete seemed in a good mood and Roger was in strong voice both here and in Greenville the night before. It was a long trip fromTexas to go see them but well worth it.

RE-UP: The Who "Quadrophenia - Can You See The Real Me?" - 1DVD

Quadrophenia-Can you see the real me ?

BBC Four Documentary

Broadcast 29th June 2012

Proshot DVD

In his home studio and revisiting old haunts in Shepherds Bush and Battersea, Pete Townshend opens his heart and his personal archive to revisit 'the last great album the Who ever made', one that took the Who full circle back to their earliest days via the adventures of a pill-popping mod on an epic journey of self-discovery.

But in 1973 Quadrophenia was an album that almost never was. Beset by money problems, a studio in construction, heroin-taking managers, a lunatic drummer and a culture of heavy drinking, Townshend took on an album that nearly broke him and one that within a year the band had turned their back on and would ignore for nearly three decades.

With unseen archive and in-depth interviews from Townshend, Roger Daltrey, Keith Moon, John Entwistle and those in the studio and behind the lens who made the album and thirty page photo booklet.

Contributors include: Pete Townshend, Roger Daltrey, Ethan Russell, Ron Nevison, Richard Barnes, Irish Jack Lyons, Bill Curbishley, John Woolf, Howie Edelson, Mark Kermode and Georgiana Steele Waller.

The Who in South Carolina for the first time.  Since they are not coming to Texas this tour I made the trip to see them in the Carolina's.
I had great seats but lousy (loud) neightbors to my left.  There was the WHOHOO guy right next to my mics so watch between songs
if you are playing this loud. He and his friend talked a lot during the show. It is not completely overwhelming or anything, but it is there.
And during Tea and Theater they left and were replaced by an even more obnoxious jackass who thought everyone was there listen to him
talk alot of crap.

That is the bad. The good is that it is a great show. I am really happy they put Drowned back as an electric piece. All thoughI love the
acoustic version also, my favortie versions of  it have always been the electric versions from 82. And though it was not quite up to those
standards it was a great change.   Roger's voice is strong,  While driving to the Greensboro show I listened to one of the Encore series
shows from 2006 and his voice was so much weaker then than it is now.  Pete played great and looked to be in good spirits the whole time.

Recorder: UNIVONC
SEAT: ROW 4 Left (In front of Pete Townsend)

Well originally had 17th row tickets for this event.
Played around on the net and found 4th row seats the day before.
Was able to sell my tickets to a fellow Dimer.

The good news is that they were 4th row tickets.......

They were also in a section of VIP ticket purchasers who had taken advantage of the all you can drink alcohol bar behind the stage.
Some chatter during show but not that distracting.
Found it quite amusing.

Fact:  This was the FIRST South Carolina appearance of the band in it's existance.
My son was also with me and it was great to see him enjoy the show and check on the Virigina Tech game score.....
It was great to hear him say that he thought it was a memory to see a such a historic band.

Pete was really into the show and started to show his enjoyment.
It was better last night than the 1986 show in Lexington, Ky

The show is pleasing to my ears and I hope you enjoy!

Bill

NEW: The Who live in London 2010 - 2CD - March 30

The Who
30th March 2010
The Royal Albert Hall
London
UK

The Who performed Quadrophenia at the Royal Albert Hall, concluding the 10th year of concerts initiated by the band's singer, Roger Daltrey, in aid of Teenage Cancer Trust.

Joined by a brass and string section, plus special guests Eddie Vedder (PearlJam) and Tom Meighan (Kasabian), The Who, supported by a superb multimedia sequence directed by Aubrey Powell, gave a brilliant interpretation of Pete Townshend's edgy masterpiece.

This recording has been circulating since '89 however this version is a new master cassette
transfer from my original analog master tape (Mar. 2010).

Another great show, this was my 3rd time seeing The Who. Pretty nice set list with some real rarities.
This show was 2 days before the LA show where the official Join Together video was shot. Decent sound on this one as there was a lot of chatter where i was. Recorded from the Field Level section 33 Row 22.

Notes:
The Who in 1989...the Who on ice...the vegas show...Many things have been said about this tour, most not good. I enjoyed these shows though. It was a celebration of the Who's career played out in stadiums mostly with a great band that was, for the most part, The Deep End with John and Roger on board. The great Simon Phillips on drums, the great Kick Horns, Jodie Linscott on percussion.   The only weak link in this band was Steve Bolton on guitar and the tour's finest moments were when PT took over on electric. Toronto couldn't have been more of a surprise. A band not known for adventurous setlists suddenly were all over the place.Tommy, solo material, covers, songs they hadn't played in more than two decades! The shows were comprised of two sets, which started out totalling about 3 hours before being pared down after about 3 weeks on the road. Roger was in great voice, John never better on bass and Pete alternated between acoustic guitar and electric guitar and sometimes really PLAYED the electric guitar! I recorded these shows on a new Panasonic dat deck I bought for this tour. With the exception of my car it was the most expensive thing I had ever bought and it would get hot enough to fry an egg on! Pittsburgh has a great Naked Eye. Buffalo has my favorite moment of the whole tour, and one of the best PT moments ever in an astounding Hey Joe. Pete finds a new pedal at the end of the first verse and then adds a great coda to finish the song.

As the band resumes the tour and starts the last run of shows, we have quite an enthusiastic audience here. In this recording, they are sometimes too powerful. The sound on here is rather rough and not well-resolved, and to top it off we get the occasional taper talk as well. Too bad, because it sounds as if the band is playing well here. It's hard to tell if Roger is having a good night or a bad night here. My vote is good, but your mileage might vary here.

Notes:
JEMS master recording and excellent sounding recording. This is the first time(August 2009) a transfer of this recording has been made available directly from the master cassette.

This is my recording of the second night of the 'Worldwind Tour' which consisted of 2 shows at the Capital Centre just outside Washington D.C. and 2 shows in Florida.  We were a bit further back this night, but the show was better and the band were sharper than the first night.  There was a false ending for Magic Bus, and as the applause started I stopped the deck to flip the tape, and they began to play again briefly,  so there is a unfortunate cut at the end there.

This show was received in a trade some time ago (sorry I do not remember the exact time - 2006-2007 perhaps). Sonically it isn't bad, but it isn't great and has a touch of distortion. This gets worse with the encore. There are some brief cuts, but they seemed to be more due to tape recorder issues here rather than music actually being gone.

Lineup:

Roger Daltrey: Harmonica, Vocals
John Entwistle: Vocals, Bass
Kenney Jones: Drums
Pete Townshend: Vocals, Guitar
John Bundrick: Piano, Keyboards
